Use commercially available spreadable garden fertilizer and start with a strong dose, as soon as the plants begin to grow in spring. Depending on the type of fertilizer, a second dose may be required after a few weeks. The plant will show you if it needs more. The leaves should always be lush green. Pale green or even yellowish leaves are a sign of a lack of nutrients or too much sun.
